The Nature of the classes and the Students

The classrooms are containing with students who belong to different racial contexts such as Sinhala, Tamil, Burger and Muslim. The communication in the classrooms were totally supposed to be in English according to the set rules of the school in general. Yet sometimes a slight usage of their mother tongues could be noted among the students. The classes are conducted fully physical and the seating patterns of the classrooms are very general. The students are seated in rows and when the activities are conducted during my teaching practicum the seating patterns of the students were changed accordingly to facilitate the lessons and learning. This change in the seating usually made the students have a different experience encouraging the engagement among the students in the class while doing the activities. The school has decided that the students in the grade 10 are comparatively more proficient in the target language to be learning the government textbook for grade 10. So, the students are taught using the government syllabus grade 11 textbook even though they are still in the grade 10. In grade 8 there is a little hyperactive student who always gets over excited about the activities in the classrooms and his behaviour is governed throughout my internship with useful techniques. For example making him always engaged with tasks.

Procedure of the Lesson Plans throughout the Week

A discussion was conducted with the principle, English language head teacher and the respective English language teacher of each class before preparing lesson plans. They instructed to focus on all four main language skills; reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Peer observation sessions were conducted for each class while the respective English Language teachers are teaching in the classroom. While observing the peer observations it reflected that the students are in need of engaging language activities that they can enjoy doing and learn at the same time. Thus, more time is allocated for activities. The Pearson syllabus was followed in the classroom and their textbook and work book have been designed to improve both main skills and sub-skills of language learning. The government English Language textbooks were also taught alongside.  The lessons to be completed within the second term were starting from the Unit 5 onwards. Since the periods are only consisting of 40 minutes duration sometimes the lessons have to be split within days. So, the lead in activity and the theoretical parts along with the while task and the evaluations have not completed within one period a day.

Teachers

The teacher-in-charge who is teaching to the grade 11, is a professional with years of experience along with a good sense of how to discipline the students in general. He is always punctual and goal oriented when it comes to preparing the lesson plans for the class since the students are getting ready for GCE Ordinary Level exam.

Mr. Zaaruk Ibrahim who is teaching to the grade 10, is very friendly with the students. While delivering his lessons remarkably exhibits a sound rapport around the students. He is always, making sure that the teacher talking time in the classroom is lesser than the student talking time. His approach to teaching in grade 10 is student centered where he acts as the guider and the facilitator of students’ learning.

Ms. Hansima who is conducting the classes for grade 8 and 9 is always so keen about the students’ behaviour in the classroom regardless of the fact that she is a little silent character. She always makes sure that each and every student is properly engaged in the classroom activities while giving individual attention to the students when needed.

Students Needs and Interests

The students are in need of constantly recapping the grammar lessons since they tend to forget about the concepts and the means of usage when it comes to complex grammar lessons. Since the students are comparatively fluent in speaking skills they tend to neglect the speaking lessons within the classrooms. Anyhow, when creative and unique activities are incorporated with the lessons they are more likely to engage with the lessons enthusiastically and the learning talks place even without them feeling that they are studying the classroom.

Strenghths of the Students

Students have sound knowledge and proficiency of the target language when compared with the government school students. the students are exposed to the target language in the daily basis. most of their households use English to communicate. And also the popular and accepted poloicy of English only communication the school promotes their Target language usage. The studnets atre highly motivated towards different and unique set of activities that makes them interested in learning. And students in general are selfmotivated with creative mindsets that make them capable of reaching higher levels of learning.
